Should You Follow Trends For Your Wedding?

Trends are always a good idea, right? Hmm, well, as someone who is a huge advocate of being authentic and true to yourself I have to say I’m not a huge fan of following trends. That being said, I know this is a topic many couples struggle with in one way or another so I wanted to write a journal entry about it. Here are some considerations to help you decide if trends are the right move for you.

  1. Personal taste - Consider your own unique style and personality before anything else. Trends come and go but you probably want your wedding to reflect who you are as a couple. If a trend aligns with your taste and vision incorporating it into your theme might be worthwhile for you. If it feels like a stretch from who you really are, then chances are good that you’re better off passing on this one.

  2. Timelessness - Certain trends could potentially date your wedding when you look back on it years later. I see it in a similar way to editing images. Some trends may be all the rage today but ten years down the line you may not enjoy the look as much as you once did. Opting for classic elements alongside a few trendy touches can help you strike a balance you’ll never grow tired of.

  3. Budget - Following trends can sometimes be expensive, especially if they involve intricate decoration, designer items or popular venues. Evaluate whether the trend fits into your budget without overshadowing other important aspects of your wedding. Remind yourself that you don’t need to keep up with the Kardashians to have an amazing experience worthy of your story.

  4. Practicality - Some trends might not be practical for your wedding location or season. For example, an outdoor winter wedding might not suit a trendy Boho vibe very easily. Keep your own vision of the day in the forefront and you won’t go wrong.

  5. Individuality - Trends can make your wedding feel like part of the current scene but if it’s too trendy you risk losing what makes it special to you. Think of incorporating some personal touches here and there to steer the trend in your own unique way.

  6. Vendor availability - Some trends might require specific vendors who specialize in that particular style. Ensure you have access to the necessary resources to execute the trend effectively.

  7. Comfort level - Whatever you decide I hope you feel comfortable and authentic on your wedding day. Don't feel pressured by what others are doing as they’re probably not concerned with your happiness years from now. Only you know how far is too far.

Incorporating trends into your wedding planning is all about finding the right balance. You can pick and choose elements from trends that appeal to you without feeling obligated to follow every single one of them. This is your day - don’t let anything take that away, regardless how popular it is in the moment.
