What to wear to your engagement session

Your engagement session is a great opportunity to get some couples time in front of the camera. In a lot of ways I like to think of it as a tiny wedding without all the stresses that often accompany the big day. Here are a few tips to plan your look with your partner while still coming across as your own person.

  1. Location, location, location - This isn’t only true for real estate, it’s something to think about when planning your outfit as well. What kind of vibe are you hoping to capture during your session? Are the two of you walking through your favorite city and taking in the sights? If so, you might want to wear clothing that represents those areas you’ll be visiting. Instead, maybe you enjoy the changing of the seasons and decide to visit a nearby park while being surrounded by warm, Fall colors. In this case you might want to wear something that fits that time of year and color story.

  2. Be comfortable - You want the images to look great but you also want to feel comfortable during the experience. Try to avoid outfits that are too constricting (this can mean something different to everyone). In order to get the best results it’s important that you don’t feel awkward. Wear clothing that makes you feel amazing inside and you’ll see yourself light up for the camera.

  3. Coordinate with your partner - No, I don’t mean buy matching sweaters. You’re both individuals and it’s perfectly fine to show that. What I’m referring to is trying to make sure that the two of you have something similar that ties your looks together. This can be something small like a touch of color shared between outfits or even a prop, such as sunglasses, you both show off from time to time.

  4. Accessories can go a long way - Think about adding a little extra variety and interest to your photos by bringing along some accessories to change up your look on the fly. Jackets, hats, scarves, sunglasses, etc. can provide easy ways to make the same outfit appear different throughout the session. Try your best not to overwhelm your outfit, the idea is to compliment what you already have going on.

  5. Flatter your skin - Consider your skin tone when choosing colors. If you have lighter skin, you might want to avoid pale or pastel colors since they can wash you out. If you have darker skin, you might want to wear bright, bold colors that will pop in your photos. Remember to keep your unique “Style” in mind when making these choices as the best outfit is the one you feel confident in.

In the end, what you wear to your session should be a reflection of who you are. If you stay true to that, and follow a few of these tips, you’ll be psyched at the final outcome!
